I am busy fighting in a different way for our freedom–so I am recycling a post from before.

Wishing you all best memories on this Memorial Day weekend.

I am grateful for their courage to fight for our freedom, and for the fact that they survived.

Addendum 11/13/09: Catching up on my reading, I came across the following excellent summary of “What We Owe Our Soldiers“:

What we owe these men who fight so bravely for their and our freedom is to send them to war only when that freedom is truly threatened, and to make every effort to protect their lives during war–by providing them with the most advantageous weapons, training, strategy, and tactics possible.

All my girls are growing up

Last week I put the chicks outside into the big coop. As a transition, I kept them locked inside their cage-inside-the-coop for two days. A few days ago, I opened the door to the cage, but even though they were free to come out and explore, the chicks stayed close to their known world. Hovering close to water and feed.

Today, the chicks have finally ventured outside into the yard. Mabel is definitely the bravest and the leader of the three. Queenie is the chicken of the group, so to speak. She goes where the others go for fear of being left alone.

The big girls pretty much ignore them–which is a good thing. This happened the last time I introduced new girls to the pack. They are a rather cliquish bunch of hens—but I expect they will eventually meld into one happy flock.

And then there is my other girl.

Today she is off to Boston to hang out with her cousins for spring break. Her first solo flight. Suitcase in one hand, passport and boarding pass in the other, equal parts nervousness and excitement, she headed through security and off to her adventure. When she gets home on Friday, we head off to the DMV for her to take her learner’s permit test.

All of my girls are growing up and gaining independence.

And I get to stand back and beam with joy.

Note to self: Listen. Think. Apply.

Today is my mom’s birthday.

She died 4 and 1/2 years ago–but lives on in the hearts of many.

New Chicks

This brings me up to eight backyard ladies. The new additions are a buff catalan, a cream brabranter and a Sicilian buttercup. If I could just add a silkie and a frizzle, my flock would be complete. Here’s what they will look like when they are grown.

I used to have a partridge silkie and a white crested black polish—but lost them to the circle of life with the help of the neighborhood raccoons.
